Finding Freedom: The Art of Letting Go

Apr 27, 2025

Nothing is permanent. Nothing stays the same, and as we mature and evolve we move and let go. When I moved from England to California it was such a huge leap and shock to my system. I had to let go of everything that made me feel safe. I remember saying goodbye to my parents and the hug my Dad gave me I will never forget! So full of the love he never had shown.

It's something all of my spiritual teachers have taught! Non emotional attachment! Loving someone or something but letting go of the attachment to it. Love doesn't require anything back, it's just love. As you let go of attachment and wanting something back it frees you and the other person. I love my family no matter what!

I loved my home I built when I first arrived in California but when it was time to get divorced I had to let go. I remember the process I went through, it was painful but necessary, every night before sleep I visualized a different scenario of someone else there and felt the emotions come up and eventually having no charge. I was free!

I was speaking to someone about letting go of where they lived because their life is going to take off, sometimes you need to make changes and it reminded me of something else that happened to me after my divorce. I was alone for 15 years and really focused a lot on my work and then I decided I did want to be in a relationship.

I remember my best friend telling me that it was important to get rid of my china, my dining room table and a chiffonier I'd brought with me from England. I was emotionally attached to all of those things! I took my China to an antique shop and I cried as I was speaking to the lady about it. (It is really special. It was created when Minton and Royal Dalton merged and the Color is something that cannot be reproduced.) Anyway I cried as I explained it. The lady wasn't interested in it.

I also listed my Victorian table and balloon back chairs and the Chiffonier with a very good Antique dealer. Nobody wanted them, but in that process, I let go of my emotional attachment to them. After I had let go of them emotionally, I actually got to keep everything, but the emotional attachment was gone. That was the key and an important reminder to let go of emotional attachment.

I remember a spiritual story about a monk walking through the forest and meeting another man who admired his beautiful ring, and the man said to the monk "I love your ring" and the monk took it off and gave it to him. A few minutes later the man came back to the monk and said "I don't want your ring. I want what you have inside of you that would allow you to give me the ring."

Love it all but let go of attachment and you're free to fly!
